About ToolboxTop10 and how we rank
ToolboxTop10 ranks tools and shop gear using published Amazon data: price, star rating, number of reviews, and the specs and features on each listing. Every category page lists 10 picks and 1 tool to avoid, scored on one scale, with the numbers behind every score shown on the page.
Where the numbers come from
Every price, rating, review count and spec comes from the product's live Amazon listing. If a listing doesn't publish a spec, the page shows a dash instead of a guess. Each page shows the date its data was captured, and prices move daily, so check the current price on Amazon before you buy.
We re-check every listing on a rotation. Listings that go unavailable, lose their featured offer, or drop out of Amazon's best-sellers for that tool get replaced, and each page's What changed section records what moved and when. We also keep every price we capture, which is where the "lowest in our checks" line under each price comes from.
How the score works
Each product gets one score from 0 to 100, built from three parts:
- Star rating. The Amazon average, out of 5.
- Number of reviews. More reviews mean more confidence that the rating is real. This part is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and it tops out at a ceiling set per category. A tool with a few hundred reviews can still score well.
- Features. The features that matter for that kind of tool, each with its own weight. A product only gets credit for a feature its listing states.

The badges
Best Overall is the highest-scoring ready-to-use option, usually a kit with a battery and charger for cordless tools. Best Budget is the best value at or under the category's price cap. Money No Object is the one to buy if price doesn't matter. When the top scorer isn't a sensible recommendation for a badge (for example, a bare tool for Best Overall, or a product that doesn't really belong in the category), we assign the badge to the next sensible pick and say why in the copy.
Tools to avoid
Every page names one listing to skip, and the reason is always something on the listing itself: a spec that contradicts another spec, a tool that's wrong for the job, a third-party body sold under another brand's battery name, or a claim the listing can't back up. We never mark a product as one to avoid just because it's new or has few reviews.
What we don't do
- We don't test tools hands-on yet. The rankings are built from published data, and the pages say so.
- No brand pays to be listed, ranked or badged.
- We don't write deal prices we can't see. Sale periods are named, and prices captured during one are flagged on the page.
How the site makes money
Links to Amazon are affiliate links. If you buy through one, ToolboxTop10 may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Amazon pays a percentage of the sale, so a pricier tool earns more, but the score never looks at price or commission. Rankings come only from the rating, review count and features described above.
