Do I need a Dremel, or is a budget kit fine?

For occasional crafts and cleanup, a $22-40 kit works. Dremel's 4000 and 4300 add electronic speed control that holds rpm when you push on a bit, and the widest range of attachments. If you'll cut metal regularly, that matters.

What speed do I need?

High speeds (25,000-35,000 rpm) for cutting and grinding metal; low speeds (5,000-15,000 rpm) for polishing, plastics and wood carving, where high rpm melts or burns. A low minimum speed is as useful as a high maximum.

What is a flex shaft for?

A flex shaft moves the bit to a pen-sized handpiece on a cable, so you can engrave and carve with fine control while the motor hangs nearby. Hang the tool so the shaft runs in a gentle curve, not a sharp bend.

Collets or a keyless chuck?

Collets grip one shank size each, so you swap collets for different bits. A 3-jaw keyless chuck takes any shank in its range without tools. Collets run truer; chucks are faster.
