The 10 Best Electric Hand Planers

Corded power planers for trimming doors, flattening boards and chamfering edges, ranked from live Amazon data.

An electric hand planer shaves wood down fast: trim a sticking door, flatten a cupped board, or take a beam down to size. We ranked 10 corded best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (a cut depth of 1/8 inch or more, a rabbeting guide, dust ejection to either side and a kickstand that protects the blades). Most cut 3-1/4 inches wide; WEN also sells a narrow 2-3/8-inch model and a wide 4-3/8-inch one for 2x4s. They run from about $31 for WEN's 6528 to $209 for Makita's KP0800K kit.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $45; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from deep cut (25%), rabbet (25%), dual dust (25%), kickstand (25%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 8,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

Buyer's guide

What can an electric hand planer do?

Trim the edge of a sticking door, flatten and size boards, take down high spots in floor joists or studs, chamfer edges with the V-groove, and cut rabbets with a fence. It's faster than a hand plane but leaves a rougher finish than a benchtop planer.

How deep should it cut?

Most cut 5/64 to 1/8 inch per pass. Deeper cuts remove wood faster but leave a rougher surface; take several shallow passes for a smooth finish.

Why does a kickstand matter?

A spring-loaded kickstand lifts the spinning blades off the bench or workpiece when you set the planer down, protecting both.

HSS or carbide blades?

High-speed steel blades are sharp and cheap to replace. Carbide blades stay sharp much longer, which matters on hardwood and painted or old lumber.

Can I plane painted or reclaimed wood?

Check for nails and screws first; metal destroys blades. Old paint can contain lead, so don't plane it without proper dust collection and a respirator.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

3.7 47 reviews   $64.99

A $65 planer that costs more than the WEN 6530 and can't agree on its own size. Buy the WEN.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says 3-1/4-inch planing width; the spec table says 8.25 inches. A handheld planer's width is its most basic spec.
  • It lists no motor amperage or warranty, and costs about $22 more than the WEN 6530, which states both.
  • At 3.7 stars it's the lowest-rated planer we compared.
