Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Oscillating Spindle Sanders

Benchtop and portable spindle sanders for smoothing curves, arcs and band-saw cuts, ranked from live Amazon data.

An oscillating spindle sander smooths curved edges (band-saw cuts, cabriole legs, templates) by spinning a sanding sleeve that also moves up and down, so it doesn't burn or groove the wood. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (variable speed, a cast iron table, a belt attachment for straight and convex edges, and a beveling table). Benchtop sanders are the norm; WEN and Triton also make portable ones that clamp upside down. They run from about $56 for WEN's portable HA5932 to $770 for JET's benchtop JBOS-5.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $60; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from variable (25%), cast iron (25%), belt (25%), bevel (25%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 2,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Why oscillate?

The up-and-down stroke spreads wear across the whole sleeve and stops the abrasive from cutting grooves or burning the wood, which a plain spinning drum does.

Spindle only or belt and spindle?

Spindles sand inside curves. A belt attachment adds a flat face for outside curves and straight edges. Combo machines save bench space.

Benchtop or portable?

Benchtop sanders give a big table that keeps edges square. Portable ones like the WEN HA5932 go to work too big to lift and clamp upside down for bench use.

What grit sleeves should I use?

80 grit to shape and remove saw marks, 120 to 150 to refine, then hand-sand finer. Match the sleeve diameter to the curve: the largest that fits.

Do I need dust collection?

Yes. Spindle sanders throw fine dust. Connect a shop vac to the dust port and wear a dust mask.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

RIKON

RIKON Power Tools 50-300 Oscillating Spindle Sander

3.7 15 reviews   $699.99

A $700 sander with a lower rating and a muddled motor spec. For more money you get JET's sealed gearbox; for far less, the WEN 6510T is rated 4.7.

Why we'd skip it

  • It's sold as a 1/2 HP motor but lists a 2.5 A draw. At 120 V that's about 300 watts, roughly 0.4 HP, short of what it claims.
  • At 3.7 stars it's the lowest-rated spindle sander we compared, at the second-highest price.
  • The JET JBOS-5 costs $70 more with a sealed oil-bath gearbox, a ball-bearing spindle and a 4.3-star rating.
