12V Dremel and Milwaukee rotary tools plus pen-size USB rechargeables for carving, sanding and 3D-print cleanup, ranked from live Amazon data.
Ranked by ToolboxTop10 from Amazon data captured Oct 10, 2026. How we rank
A cordless rotary tool does the same cutting, sanding, engraving and polishing as a corded one, without a cord to drag over the work. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (30,000 rpm or more, a brand battery platform, a brushless motor and a big accessory kit). There are two classes: 12V tools from Dremel, Milwaukee and others that can cut metal, and 4V pen-size tools for crafts, engraving and 3D-print cleanup that their makers say aren't for heavy work. They run from about $24 for HARDELL's mini to $149 for Dremel's brushless 8250.

How we rank
Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted
45% on its star rating,
35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more
confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that
matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the
best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under
$30; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.
The features score is built from high speed (30%), platform (25%), big kit (25%), a brushless motor (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 15,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

Buyer's guide
12V or a pen-size 4V tool?
12V tools (Dremel 8240 and 8250, Milwaukee M12) can cut bolts, grind and drill like a corded Dremel. 4V pen-size tools are lighter and quieter for crafts, engraving, nail grinding and 3D-print cleanup, but their makers say they're not for cutting or heavy work.
Will Dremel accessories fit other brands?
Most rotary accessories use a 1/8-inch shank, and any tool with a 1/8-inch collet or a universal chuck takes them. Some pen tools, like the Fanttik F2 Master, only take 3/32-inch shanks. Dremel's own attachments (guides, flex shafts) fit Dremel tools.
Is a brushless rotary tool worth it?
Brushless motors run cooler, last longer and get more out of each charge. On a 12V tool you use for cutting and grinding, it's a real gain. For light crafts it's not needed.
How long does the battery last?
It depends on speed and load. Pen tools run 20 minutes to a few hours on light work. 12V tools with removable batteries let you swap packs and keep going.
What safety gear do I need?
Eye protection every time; cut-off wheels can shatter. Wear a dust mask when sanding resin or 3D prints.
Tools to avoid
Not everything in the search results deserves your money.
This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.
A pen-size clone with a listing that can't agree on its own speed. The HARDELL mini is about $8 more, with more reviews and its limits stated honestly.
Why we'd skip it
The bullets give five speeds from 5,000 to 18,000 rpm; the spec table says 3,000 to 15,000 rpm. Pick one.
It claims to cover everything 'from cutting metal to polishing jewelry'. Near-identical 3.7V pen tools from HARDELL and GINELSON say outright they're not for heavy-duty work, and Dremel won't even rate its 4V Lite for cutting.
It lists no weight or warranty, and the spec table names drill bits as the only included component, though the title promises 75 pieces.
