The 10 Best Drywall Screw Guns

Cordless and corded drywall screw guns for hanging sheetrock, ranked from live Amazon data.

A drywall screw gun sets every screw at the same depth so you don't tear the paper or leave screws proud. We ranked 10 best-sellers from DEWALT, Milwaukee, RYOBI and a budget brand on rating, review volume and features (a brushless motor, cordless power, push or auto start and a battery in the box).

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $100; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from a brushless motor (35%), cordless (25%), auto start (25%), battery included (15%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 2,500 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Why not just use a drill?

A drywall screw gun has a depth-setting nosecone that sinks each screw just below the paper without tearing it, and a clutch that disengages when the screw is set. It's faster and gives a cleaner finish than a drill.

Corded or cordless?

Corded guns are cheap and run all day. Cordless guns are lighter and free you from the cord on ladders and ceilings, and modern brushless ones get through dozens of sheets per charge.

What are PushStart and Auto Start?

The trigger stays locked on, but the motor only spins when you press a screw into the board. It's quieter and saves battery.

High RPM or high torque?

Around 4,000 to 5,300 RPM suits drywall. Slower, 2,500 RPM guns like the DW276 and DW257 have more torque for decking and heavy-gauge steel.

Do I need a collated attachment?

For whole houses, a collated (strip-fed) attachment speeds up hanging a lot. For a room or two, loose screws are fine.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

MAXXT

MAXXT 20V Brushless Drywall Screw Gun (Tool Only), 2-in-1 Screwdriver and Router

2.8 12 reviews   $128.99

A 2-in-1 screw gun and router whose listing contradicts itself on what's in the box, with the lowest rating of the guns we looked at.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says 'Tool Only', but the spec table lists 'Batteries' as the included component.
  • The model number is two part numbers joined with a plus sign, and the spec table gives the 'maximum chuck size' as 5.7 centimeters, which is the longest screw it sets, not a chuck size.
  • It's rated 2.8 stars. The RYOBI P225 is brushless, cheaper, and rated 4.4.
