How much torque does a cordless ratchet need?

Less than you'd think. Cordless ratchets are for running fasteners in and out quickly, not breaking them loose. 35-40 ft-lb handles most engine bay work; 60-75 ft-lb helps with stubborn bolts. Break tight bolts loose with a hand ratchet first to save the gears.

12V or 20V?

12V ratchets are smaller and lighter, which matters in tight engine bays. 20V ratchets have more torque but bigger bodies. If you already own a battery platform, stay on it.

Kit or bare tool?

If you own Milwaukee M12 or DEWALT 20V batteries, buy the bare tool. If you don't, a kit with two batteries and a charger is the cheapest way in, but those batteries won't run other brands' tools.

Do I need an extended head?

An extended neck reaches bolts tucked behind hoses, brackets and other parts. It's longer overall, so a standard head is better in cramped spaces with nothing in the way.

Can I use a cordless ratchet to torque bolts to spec?

No. Run the bolt down with the ratchet, then finish with a torque wrench.

  • It claims 88 ft-lb at 500 rpm. DEWALT's own DCF510B, the strongest ratchet on this page, is rated 75 ft-lb at 300 rpm. A clone body with a stronger and faster motor at under a third of the price isn't believable.
