Detail sander or random orbital sander?

A random orbital sander is faster and leaves a better finish on flat panels. A detail sander's pointed pad gets into corners, along trim and between spindles. Many people own both.

Do I need the extra attachments?

Only for furniture and trim. A finger attachment gets between chair slats and spindles; a contour pad follows curves. For corners and edges, the standard pad is enough.

Does orbits per minute matter?

A little. Faster pads remove material quicker, but every sander here runs 12,000 to 16,000 opm. Dust collection and paper quality make more difference.

Can I use regular sandpaper?

Detail sanders use pre-cut hook-and-loop sheets shaped like the pad. Buy sheets that match the pad size and hole pattern so dust collection works.

Will a detail sander strip paint?

It will for small areas like window frames and trim, with 60 or 80 grit. For large painted surfaces a random orbital or belt sander is much faster. Test old paint for lead before sanding it.
