Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Bench Grinders

6-inch and 8-inch bench grinders for sharpening, shaping and cleaning up metal, ranked from live Amazon data.

A bench grinder spins two abrasive wheels for sharpening mower blades, chisels and drill bits, shaping metal and cleaning rust with a wire wheel. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (a cast iron base or body, a work light, and a slow speed for sharpening without burning the edge). Standard grinders run about 3,450 rpm; low-speed 1,750 rpm models are made for woodworking tools. They run from about $49 for WEN's 6-inch to $470 for JET's 8-inch with a wire wheel.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $70; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from cast iron (35%), slow speed (35%), light (30%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 3,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

6-inch or 8-inch?

6-inch grinders cover blades, knives and drill bits in a home garage. 8-inch wheels last longer, run at a higher surface speed and give more room between the wheels for bigger parts.

What is a low-speed grinder for?

Low-speed grinders run about 1,750 rpm instead of 3,450. The slower wheel heats the edge less, so chisels, plane irons and turning tools don't lose their temper. For metal work, standard speed is faster.

Which grit wheels do I need?

A coarse wheel (36 grit) for shaping and removing metal, and a finer wheel (60 to 120 grit) for sharpening. White aluminum oxide wheels run cooler than the gray ones and suit tool steel.

Do I need to bolt a bench grinder down?

Yes. Bolt it to a bench or stand so it can't walk or tip, and set the tool rests within 1/8 inch of the wheel so work can't get pulled in.

Can I put a wire wheel on a bench grinder?

Yes, on most models, as long as the wheel's arbor size and maximum rpm match the grinder. A wire wheel strips rust and paint and cleans up welds.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

Ecarke 3" Mini Bench Grinder Compatible with Dewalt 20V (Tool Only), 2000-10000 RPM, AC Adapter

4.1 65 reviews   $39.99

A 3-inch hobby grinder sold for jobs it isn't built for. For about $9 more, the WEN BG4276 has 6-inch wheels, eye guards, a light and a 2-year warranty.

Why we'd skip it

  • The box list is the grinder, an AC adapter, rubber feet and a towel. It doesn't list eye shields, spark guards or tool rests, the basic safety parts a bench grinder should come with.
  • It's marketed for axes and bush hooks, but a 3-inch wheel is a hobby size. Heavy blades want a 6- or 8-inch grinder with proper tool rests.
  • It's a third-party body on DEWALT batteries, so DEWALT doesn't warrant it, and the listing names no warranty of its own.
