Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Staple Guns

Manual heavy-duty and light-duty staple guns for upholstery, insulation, wire and crafts, ranked from live Amazon data.

A manual staple gun fastens fabric, screen, insulation, wire and house wrap with no battery or hose. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (adjustable driving power, the ability to drive brad nails, staples in the box and a long warranty). Check the staple type: heavy-duty guns take T50 staples (Arrow's standard, also sold by others) up to 9/16 inch, while light-duty guns take smaller JT21 staples for crafts and fabric. They run from about $8 for HAUSHOF's light-duty gun to $42 for DEWALT's carbon fiber tacker.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $15; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from power adjust (25%), brads (25%), staples (25%), long warranty (25%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 15,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

T50 or JT21 staples?

T50 is the heavy-duty standard (Arrow's design, made by many brands) in 1/4 to 9/16 inch, for insulation, wrap, upholstery and wood. JT21 is a lighter staple for crafts, fabric and screens. Buy the gun for the staples you'll use.

Do I need a multi-fastener staple gun?

Guns that also drive brads or narrow staples are handy for trim and furniture repair. If you only staple insulation or fabric, a plain T50 is simpler and lasts longer.

What does power adjustment do?

It sets how hard the staple drives. Turn it down for soft materials and fabric so staples don't punch through; up for hardwood.

Manual or electric?

Manual staplers are cheap, reliable and need no power, fine for a project or two. For hundreds of staples a day, an electric or pneumatic stapler saves your hand.

How do I staple over cables safely?

Use a gun with a wire guide and staples sized for the cable, and never pierce the cable jacket. Low-voltage wire only; follow code for electrical wiring.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

PHITRIC 4-in-1 Heavy Duty Upholstery Staple Gun with 1200 Staples (PTHT-010)

4.3 3,247 reviews   $14.99

A 4-in-1 kit that can't say how many staples you get. The YEAHOME 4-in-1 is $2 more with 4,000 staples and nearly five times the reviews.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title promises 1,200 staples, a bullet says 300 of each type, and the spec table says 6,000 fasteners.
  • The spec table gives its warranty as just '1' and its size as 14.65 x 8.07 inches, so the listing's details can't be trusted.
  • It's tied for the lowest rating among the staple guns we compared.
