Aluminum wrenches are about 40% lighter with the same jaws, which matters when you use them overhead or all day. Cast iron is cheaper and fine for occasional use.

What size do I need?

A 10- to 14-inch wrench handles most household pipe. An 18-inch reaches 2-1/2-inch pipe and gives more leverage. 24-inch and up is for large pipe and stubborn joints.

Why use two wrenches?

Use one wrench to hold the fitting and the other to turn the pipe, so you don't twist or crack the rest of the line.

Will it damage the pipe?
