How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $15; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from temp control (30%), a digital temperature display (20%), auto sleep (20%), extra tips (15%), a complete kit (15%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 10,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Iron, station or gun?

A pencil iron plugs straight into the wall and is fine for occasional repairs. A station puts the controls in a separate base, holds temperature better under load, and usually has a proper holder. A soldering gun is for heavy wire, lugs and stained glass, and is too hot for circuit boards.

How many watts do I need?

For electronics, 60-80 W with temperature control is plenty. More watts mostly means faster recovery when the tip touches a big joint. High wattage without temperature control is a liability on boards.

What temperature should I solder at?

Leaded 60/40 solder melts at about 370°F (188°C) and is usually worked around 600-650°F. Lead-free solder melts around 423°F (217°C) and usually needs 650-700°F. Go hotter only for large joints.

Does auto sleep matter?

Yes, if you leave the iron on between jobs. Dropping the temperature when idle slows oxidation and makes tips last much longer, and it's a safety net if you forget to switch off.

What does the Pinecil need to run?

A USB-C charger that supports PD or QC 3.0, or a DC barrel supply. None is in the box, and a weak phone charger won't give it full power.

Why do tip series matter?

Spare tips fit only their own series (900M, T18, T19 and so on). Check what's included and what replacement tips cost before you buy, because tips wear out.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

300W High Power Soldering Iron Kit 110V, Industrial Grade External Heating Soldering Iron with Replacement Tip, Heating Core and Stand
GoGoPanda

300W High Power Soldering Iron Kit 110V, Industrial Grade External Heating Soldering Iron with Replacement Tip, Heating Core and Stand

4.4 76 reviews   $39.99

A 300 W iron with no temperature control, sold for circuit repair, with a spec table that rates it to only 480°F.

Why we'd skip it

  • The bullets list circuit repair among its uses, but nothing in the listing mentions adjustable or controlled temperature. An uncontrolled 300 W iron on a circuit board lifts pads and cooks components.
  • The spec table gives an upper temperature of 480°F, which contradicts the 'industrial grade' 300 W pitch and sits barely above the roughly 423°F melting point of common lead-free solder.
  • For heavy work, the Weller D550PK gun heats in 6 seconds and has a lifetime warranty; for electronics, any temperature-controlled iron on this list is the right tool.
