The 10 Best Corded Die Grinders

Plug-in straight die grinders for porting, deburring and weld cleanup, ranked from live Amazon data.

A corded die grinder spins 1/4 in burrs and stones at 25,000 to 33,000 rpm for as long as you need. We ranked 10 best-sellers from DEWALT, Makita, Metabo HPT and three value brands on rating, review volume and features (variable speed, a paddle switch that stops when released, and a name brand behind it). The main split is switch type: paddle for safety, slide or rocker for comfort on long jobs.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $70; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from variable speed (35%), a paddle switch (35%), name brand (30%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 1,200 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

What is a die grinder for?

Small, fast work with 1/4 in shank accessories: carbide burrs for porting and shaping metal, mounted stones for deburring, sanding rolls, and small cutoff wheels for weld cleanup. It spins far faster than an angle grinder but removes less material per pass.

Paddle switch or slide switch?

A paddle switch stops the motor the moment you let go, which matters on a tool that can grab and pull if a burr catches. A slide or rocker switch is easier on the hand during long porting jobs. Some shops require no-lock-on paddles, which is why DEWALT sells the DWE4887N.

Do I need variable speed?

Carbide burrs work best at full speed, but polishing, sanding rolls and plastics need lower speeds to avoid burning. If you only deburr steel, a single-speed grinder is fine. For mixed work, the DWE4997VS, SENCAN and AOBEN all adjust speed.

Corded, air or cordless?

Air die grinders are cheap and light but need a compressor that can keep up. Cordless models are handy away from power but cost more once you add batteries. A corded grinder runs all day at full power with nothing else to buy.

What does AC/DC capability mean?

The DEWALT and Makita AC/DC models can run off the DC output of a welder or a generator, so a welder can grind on site from the same machine.

How do I match accessories to the grinder?

Every burr, stone and wheel has a maximum safe rpm printed on it or its package. It must be at or above the grinder's top speed, which is why a listing that gives conflicting speeds is a problem.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

VEVOR Die Grinder, 1/4", Heavy-Duty Electric, Adjustable Speed (10000-28000RPM), with 1/4" & 1/8" Collets

4.0 140 reviews   $56.90

A listing that can't agree with itself on speed or power, sold under a SKU instead of a model number. The SENCAN, for about $13 more, publishes one consistent set of figures.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says 10,000 to 28,000 rpm, the first bullet says 7,000 to 30,000 rpm, and the spec table caps it at 28,000 rpm. Burrs and mounted stones carry a maximum rpm rating, so you need to know the real top speed.
  • The spec table lists 225 watts and 1.1 hp side by side. 1.1 hp is about 820 W, nearly four times 225 W, and no amp rating is given.
  • The model number is a 19-character SKU (MJMCYSKDKDS70KHZOV1), which gives you nothing to search for a manual or parts.
  • It rates 4.0 stars.
