Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Laser Levels

Self-leveling cross-line and 360-degree laser levels for hanging pictures, cabinets, tile and ceilings, ranked from live Amazon data.

A self-leveling laser projects a level (and plumb) line across a wall or a whole room, so you can hang a row of cabinets or tile a backsplash without a 4-foot level and a pencil. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (a green beam, full 360-degree lines, a rechargeable battery, a pulse mode for outdoor detectors and a tripod in the box). Cross-line lasers cover one wall at a time; 3x360 lasers wrap the whole room. They run from about $35 to $499 for DEWALT's 3x360 green kit.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $40; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from green (25%), plane 360 (25%), rechargeable (20%), pulse (15%), tripod (15%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 10,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Cross-line or 360-degree?

A cross-line laser projects one horizontal and one vertical line on the wall in front of it, which covers pictures, shelves and a run of cabinets. A 3x360 laser wraps level and plumb lines around the whole room, which helps with ceilings, wall-to-wall tile and framing.

Green or red beam?

Green beams look about 2 to 4 times brighter to the eye, so they're easier to see in lit rooms and at distance. Red lasers cost less and run longer on batteries.

What does self-leveling mean?

A pendulum inside swings the laser level by itself within about 3-4 degrees. If you set it on an uneven surface beyond that, it blinks to warn you. Lock the pendulum before moving it.

What is pulse mode?

Outdoors or in bright sun you often can't see the beam. Pulse mode makes the laser flash at a rate a laser detector (sold separately) can pick up, extending the range to 150 feet or more.

How accurate does a laser level need to be?

About 1/8 inch at 30 feet is the common standard and fine for cabinets and tile. Many budget lasers don't publish an accuracy figure at all; check one against a known level line before relying on it.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

AikTryee Laser Level Line Tool, Cross Line Laser Leveler Beam Tool with 8ft Tape

4.3 16,135 reviews   $9.95

A $10 laser pointer with bubble vials, sold as a laser level. For $25 more, the Lusweimi actually levels itself and lists its accuracy.

Why we'd skip it

  • It isn't self-leveling. You line up a bubble vial by eye while it's stuck to the wall, so the line is only as level as your read of the bubble, which is exactly the error a laser level is supposed to remove.
  • The listing gives no accuracy figure at all, even though it's sold for cabinets and tile, the jobs where 1/8 inch matters.
  • It projects the line from where it's mounted on the wall, so it can't throw a level line across a room or onto an opposite wall like the self-leveling lasers above.
