How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $30; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from pinless mode (30%), pin mode (25%), ambient readings (25%), species scales (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 15,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Pin or pinless?

Pin meters push two pins into the material and read moisture between them; they're precise and good for lumber and firewood but leave tiny holes. Pinless meters scan up to about 3/4 inch deep with a flat pad, so they're better for finished floors, walls and furniture. Combo meters do both.

What reading is too wet?

Firewood should be under about 20% before you burn it. Lumber for indoor furniture is usually dried to 6 to 8%. In drywall, compare a suspect spot to a dry area of the same wall; a big difference means water.

Why do species scales matter?

Different woods conduct electricity differently, so a meter set for oak reads pine wrong. Meters with species or density settings give real moisture percentages for each wood.

Can a moisture meter find mold?

Not directly. It finds the moisture mold needs. If a wall reads wet, open it up or call a pro.

Do I need temperature and humidity?

For inspections, yes. High room humidity explains damp readings and helps you judge drying. For firewood, no.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

Wood moisture meters and water leak detectors are suitable for the rapid determination of moisture content in various materials

4.4 2,916 reviews   $17.99

A pin meter whose listing names two different brands and claims an electronic meter needs no power supply.

Why we'd skip it

  • The bullets call it a 'COCZOW moisture meter' and then say 'Get professional and accurate results with Peakmeter Wood Moisture Tester', a different brand.
  • It lists a backlit LCD with hold and auto-shutoff, then says 'no power supply required'. Every digital meter needs a battery.
  • The title is a sentence about moisture meters in general with no product name. The General Tools MMD4E is a clearly specified pin meter with 15,230 reviews.
