How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $20; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from adj emissivity (30%), ds 12 (25%), wide range (25%), max min (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 50,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

What is distance-to-spot?

D:S tells you how big the measured spot is at a distance. At 12:1, from 12 inches away you read a 1-inch circle. Higher ratios read smaller or farther targets.

Why does emissivity matter?

IR thermometers assume a surface emits heat like a matte object (about 0.95). Shiny metal like stainless or aluminum reads low. Adjustable emissivity, or a piece of tape on the surface, fixes that.

Can it read air or liquid temperature?

No. IR reads surfaces only. For air in a duct or liquid in a pot, use a probe; Klein's IR10 includes one.

What range do I need?

752°F covers electrical, HVAC and engines. Pizza ovens and forges need 900°F to 1,100°F or more.

Not for people

These are surface thermometers for objects. They aren't calibrated for body temperature.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

SURPEER Infrared Thermometer Temperature Gun, -58 to 1796°F, 50:1

4.7 141 reviews   $39.99

A $40 thermometer claiming a 50:1 distance-to-spot ratio, two and a half times Klein's $115 IR10 and five times Fluke's 62 Max.

Why we'd skip it

  • It claims '50:1 distance-to-spot ratio'. Klein's top IR10 is 20:1 and Fluke's industrial 62 Max is 10:1.
  • No accuracy figure is given to back the 50:1 or the 1796°F range.
  • The model number is written in decorative bold Unicode characters and the part number is a random string, so the exact product is hard to identify. The TempPro TP450 lists a 16:1 ratio and ±1.5% accuracy for less.
