Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Stud Finders

Multi-sensor, single-sensor and magnetic stud finders for TVs, shelves and cabinets, ranked from live Amazon data.

A stud finder tells you where to drive the screw so a TV or shelf stays on the wall. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (multiple sensors that show the full stud width, live wire detection, scanning 1.5 inches deep or more, and no calibration). There are three types: multi-sensor finders show the whole stud at once, single-sensor scanners find edges as you slide, and magnets find the screws in the stud. They run from about $10 for a magnet or a CRAFTSMAN scanner to $119 for Franklin's deep-scanning MAX.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $15; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from multi sensor (30%), live wire (25%), deep (25%), no calibration (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 20,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Which type of stud finder should I buy?

Multi-sensor finders (Franklin) show the full stud width the moment you press the button. Single-sensor finders find an edge as you slide and need calibrating on an empty spot. Magnets don't find the stud at all: they find the screws or nails holding drywall to it, which is reliable and never needs batteries.

Do I need live wire detection?

It's a useful warning before drilling near outlets and switches, but it only senses live, unshielded AC wiring. It won't find dead wires, low-voltage cable or plastic pipe. Turn the circuit off when in doubt.

How deep does a stud finder need to read?

Standard drywall is 1/2 inch, so 3/4 inch is enough for most homes. Double drywall, plaster or tile over drywall need 1.5 inches or more.

Do stud finders work on plaster walls?

Electronic finders struggle with lath and plaster because the lath strips read like studs. A deep multi-sensor finder like the Franklin MAX handles it better; a strong magnet finding the lath nails also works.

How do I confirm I've found a stud?

Studs are usually 16 inches apart on center. Find two, check the spacing, and drill a small test hole or drive a thin nail where the mount will cover it.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

Klein Tools

Klein Tools ESF150LL Laser Level Stud Finder, Bubble Level, Laser Class 3R

3.9 165 reviews   $63.99

A stud finder with a stronger laser than it needs and the weakest rating we found. For about $4 less, the Franklin M210 shows the full stud width and adds wire detection and a bubble level.

Why we'd skip it

  • Its laser is Class 3R (up to 5 mW). Class 2 lasers, the usual choice for consumer line lasers, are limited to 1 mW, and 3R is the class where accidental direct eye exposure becomes a real hazard. That's a poor fit for a tool you hold and sweep across walls at head height.
  • At 3.9 stars it's the lowest-rated stud finder of the 15 we compared.
  • It costs more than the Franklin M210, which is rated 4.6 stars, scans deeper (1.7 in vs 1.5 in) and detects live wires; this listing doesn't mention wire detection.
