What drive size socket set do I need?

3/8 in drive is the most useful single size: it handles most car, bike and household fasteners. 1/4 in drive is for small bolts and tight spots, and 1/2 in drive is for lug nuts, suspension and anything that needs a long breaker bar. If you only buy one set, get one with 3/8 in drive. A set with all three covers nearly everything.

Do I need both SAE and metric sockets?

In the US, yes. Most modern cars are metric, but older American vehicles, lawn equipment, trailers and a lot of household hardware are SAE. A set with both saves you from finding out mid-job that 10 mm doesn't fit.

What's the difference between 6-point and 12-point sockets?

A 6-point socket grips the flat sides of a nut, so it's far less likely to round off a tight or rusty fastener. A 12-point socket fits onto the nut at more angles, which helps in cramped spaces, but it bears on the corners. For general and automotive work, 6-point is the safer default.

Can I use regular chrome sockets on an impact wrench?

No. Chrome sockets are hard but brittle, and the hammering of an impact wrench can crack them. Impact sockets are made from tougher steel, usually with a black finish and thicker walls. If you own an impact wrench, buy a dedicated impact set like the DEWALT, CASOMAN or NEIKO sets here.

Why does ratchet tooth count matter?

Tooth count sets how far you have to swing the handle before it catches. A 72-tooth ratchet needs 5 degrees of swing, a 24-tooth ratchet needs 15. In an engine bay or under a sink, that difference decides whether you can turn the bolt at all.

Is a big piece count worth it?

Only partly. Piece counts include every bit, hex key and adapter, so a 200-piece set may have fewer sockets than you'd think. Check the size run instead: a good set has every size from about 1/4 to 3/4 in and 8 to 19 mm with no gaps, in both deep and shallow.
