Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Wire Strippers

Manual and self-adjusting wire strippers for house wiring, car wiring and electronics, ranked from live Amazon data.

A wire stripper removes insulation without nicking the copper, which a knife can't do reliably. We ranked 10 best-sellers from Klein, KNIPEX, IRWIN and value brands on rating, review volume and features (self-adjusting jaws, a crimper, screw or bolt cutters and separate solid and stranded markings). Klein makes three of the ten picks.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $15; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from self adjusting (35%), crimper (25%), screw or bolt cutter (20%), stranded marked (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 15,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Manual or self-adjusting?

Manual strippers have a hole for each wire gauge; you pick the hole, squeeze and pull. Self-adjusting (automatic) strippers grip and strip in one squeeze on any size in their range. Automatic is faster for repetitive work; manual is slimmer and more precise in tight boxes.

What's the difference between solid and stranded?

House wiring is usually solid copper; extension cords, car wiring and speaker wire are stranded. Stranded wire of the same gauge is slightly thicker, so better strippers mark separate holes for each.

What gauge is house wiring?

Most US outlets and lights use 14 AWG (15 A circuits) or 12 AWG (20 A circuits). Strippers rated 10-20 or 10-22 AWG cover both.

Do I need a crimper?

If you work on cars, trailers or anything with spade and ring terminals, yes. For outlets and switches, no.

What are screw shears for?

Holes for 6-32 and 8-32 screws let you cut outlet and switch screws to length without ruining the threads.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

4.6 611 reviews   $4.39

A $4 stripper whose listing disagrees with itself on the wire sizes it handles and doesn't even spell its own brand consistently.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says '10-20 AWG' but the bullets say 'a range of 10-22 AWG', so you can't tell whether it strips 22-gauge wire.
  • The brand field says 'Htaexpu' while the first bullet says 'The Htaxepu Advantage', and the model number is just 'Wire Stripper'.
  • The bullets explain what wire strippers do in general instead of describing this tool. The WGGE WG-015 is a few dollars more, clearly specified, and has 17,090 reviews.
