The 10 Best Bar Clamps

Quick-grip trigger clamps, steel F-clamps and parallel clamps for glue-ups and assembly, ranked from live Amazon data.

Clamps are the tool you never have enough of. We ranked 10 best-selling bar clamp sets on rating, review volume and features (600 lbs or more of force, 24-inch or longer capacity, parallel jaws and spreader conversion). There are three types: one-handed trigger clamps for quick holds and light glue-ups (about 150 lbs), steel F-clamps for real pressure (400-600 lbs), and parallel clamps that stay square on cabinets and panels (1,100 lbs and up). Sets run from about $24 for two WORKPRO 12-inch clamps to $200 for Bora's four parallel clamps.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $25; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from high force (30%), long (25%), parallel (25%), spreader (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 15,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Which type of clamp do I need?

Trigger clamps (Quick-Grip style) are fast and one-handed, but only about 150 lbs, fine for holding work and light glue-ups. Steel F-clamps reach 400-600 lbs for real glue joints. Parallel clamps apply 1,000+ lbs with jaws that stay parallel, which keeps cabinets and panels square.

How many clamps do I need?

More than you think. A typical panel glue-up uses a clamp every 8 to 12 inches, alternating above and below. Start with four to six of the size you use most.

What size clamps should I buy?

6 and 12-inch clamps for small parts and edge work, 24 to 36-inch for tabletops, frames and cabinet sides. The listed size is the maximum opening; check throat depth (reach) too.

What does converting to a spreader mean?

Many clamps let you reverse the fixed jaw so the clamp pushes outward. That's useful for separating glued parts or pressing assemblies apart.

Do I need pads?

Steel jaws can dent softwood and stain wood with glue. Use the built-in pads, or put scrap blocks between the jaws and the work.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

4 Inch Bar Clamps for Woodworking, 5 Pcs Trigger Quick Grip Clamps, One Handed Ratchet

4.3 508 reviews   $8.99

Five tiny clamps with nothing on the listing to tell you what they can hold. The WORKPRO pair costs more but lists 150 lbs and has 5,795 reviews.

Why we'd skip it

  • The listing never gives a clamping force, the one number that tells you what a clamp can do. Every other set here states one.
  • The spec table lists the model number as '1' and the weight of five clamps as 0.01 kg (about a third of an ounce). Neither can be right.
  • It calls them 'heavy-duty' and 'c clamps' as well as bar clamps, so the listing can't settle on what you're buying.
