The 10 Best Torque Wrenches

Click, micrometer and digital torque wrenches for lug nuts, spark plugs, bikes and engine work, ranked from live Amazon data.

A torque wrench tightens a bolt to a set spec and tells you when to stop, so wheels stay on and threads don't strip. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (accuracy of ±3% or better, measuring in both directions, a calibration certificate and a storage case). Pick the drive size by the job: 1/4-inch in inch-pounds for bikes and small fasteners, 3/8-inch for spark plugs and engine work, 1/2-inch for lug nuts and suspension. They run from about $28 for Hairich's 1/2-inch to $110 for TEKTON's micrometer wrench.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $30; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from accuracy 3 (35%), dual direction (25%), certificate (20%), a carrying case (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 20,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Which drive size do I need?

1/2-inch for lug nuts, suspension and anything over about 80 ft-lb. 3/8-inch for spark plugs and most engine bolts. 1/4-inch, rated in inch-pounds, for bikes and small fasteners. A torque wrench is least accurate at the bottom fifth of its range, so pick one where your spec sits in the middle.

Click, micrometer or digital?

Click wrenches (most of this list) break over with a click when you hit the setting. Micrometer wrenches are click wrenches with a finer, locking scale. Digital wrenches read out the torque on a screen and warn you as you approach it; they're more precise but need batteries.

What does ±4% accuracy mean?

At a 100 ft-lb setting, the wrench may click anywhere from 96 to 104 ft-lb. That's within the ASME standard for click wrenches and fine for wheels and most car work. ±3% or ±2% matters more on engine internals.

Do I need a wrench that measures both directions?

Only for left-hand threads, such as some bike pedals, axle nuts and fan clutches. Most wrenches ratchet both ways but only measure clockwise.

How do I keep a torque wrench accurate?

Wind it back to the lowest setting after use, never use it to break bolts loose, and don't drop it. Have it checked or recalibrated every year or so if you use it often.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

INGJER

INGJER Torque Wrench, Mini 20-240in.lb, 1/4 Torque Wrench

4.4 570 reviews   $16.99

A $17 inch-pound wrench whose listing can't keep its own specs straight. If you need inch-pounds, the LEXIVON LX-181 is $21 more and comes with a calibration certificate from a brand with 7,760 reviews on it.

Why we'd skip it

  • It's rated 20-240 inch-pounds, but the listing says it has dual ft-lb and Nm scales. The scale is the one thing you read on a torque wrench, and the listing gives two different answers.
  • The spec table lists the wrench as 3.9 inches long, shorter than a 1/4-inch ratchet head plus handle can be. Either the number is wrong or you're getting something other than what's pictured.
  • There's no model number anywhere on the listing, so there's no way to match the calibration report to a product line.
