The 10 Best Pneumatic Brad Nailers

18-gauge air brad nailers for trim, molding and furniture, ranked from live Amazon data.

A pneumatic brad nailer drives thin 18-gauge brads, 5/8 to 2 inches long, for trim, baseboard, casing and furniture. It needs an air compressor, but even a small pancake runs one, and it's lighter and much cheaper than a cordless model. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (tool-free depth adjustment, tool-free jam release, oil-free motor, selectable trigger and a case). They run from about $29 for a bare NuMax to $134 for Makita's aluminum AF506. See our air compressor list if you need one.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $45; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from depth adjust (20%), jam release (20%), oil free (20%), selectable trigger (20%), a carrying case (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 5,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Brad nailer or finish nailer?

An 18-gauge brad nailer shoots thin nails that leave tiny holes, ideal for trim, casing and small molding. A 16-gauge finish nailer shoots thicker, longer nails for baseboard, door jambs and heavier trim. Most people start with a brad nailer.

What size compressor do I need?

Brad nailers use very little air, well under 1 CFM. Any pancake or small hot-dog compressor runs one easily. See our air compressor list.

Oil-free or oiled?

Oil-free nailers don't need a few drops of oil each day and won't spit oil onto finished wood. Oiled nailers are fine for paint-grade trim; keep a rag handy.

Sequential or bump fire?

Sequential (single) mode fires one nail per trigger pull with the nose pressed: safer and more precise. Bump (contact) mode fires each time the nose touches with the trigger held, which is faster for repetitive work. A selectable trigger gives you both.

Is a 2-in-1 nailer/stapler worth it?

If you'll staple upholstery, drawer bottoms or screen as well as nail trim, yes. Brads and 1/4-inch narrow crown staples share a magazine width, so the combo tools work well. Avoid tools that also claim 16-gauge nails.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

NuMax

NuMax SL31 Pneumatic 3-in-1 Nail Gun, 16 GA & 18 GA Finish Nailer, Brad Nailer, Stapler

4.1 1,266 reviews   $47.69

A 3-in-1 gun that tries to drive two nail gauges and staples through one nose. Buy a dedicated 18-gauge nailer here, or a separate 16-gauge finish nailer if you need one.

Why we'd skip it

  • It claims to fire 16-gauge finish nails, 18-gauge brads and 18-gauge staples. 16- and 18-gauge fasteners are different thicknesses; one drive blade and nose sized for both fit neither perfectly, which is how jams and bent nails happen.
  • It's rated 4.1 stars, the lowest of any brad nailer we considered with this many reviews.
  • For about $18 less, NuMax's own SBR50 does the 18-gauge job with a dedicated mechanism, and the $40 NEU MASTER 2-in-1 adds staples.
