Jointer or planer?

A jointer flattens one face and squares one edge. A planer then makes the opposite face parallel at a set thickness. For rough lumber you need both, or a planer sled.

How wide?

6 inches handles edges and narrow boards. 8 to 12 inches lets you flatten wider boards for tabletops without ripping them first.

Spiral or straight knives?

Spiral (helical) heads cut with a shearing action, so they're quieter and tear out less on figured wood. Carbide inserts last much longer than HSS.

Why table length matters?

Longer tables straighten longer boards. Benchtop jointers work best on boards up to about twice the table length.
