The 10 Best Wood Lathes

Mini, midi and full-size woodturning lathes for pens, bowls and spindles, ranked from live Amazon data.

A wood lathe spins the wood while you shape it with handheld tools, for bowls, pens, spindles and table legs. We ranked 10 best-sellers from JET, WEN, VEVOR and ArtyMaster on rating, review volume and features (electronic variable speed, cast iron construction and spindle indexing). Match the swing to what you'll turn, and check the slowest speed before buying for bowls.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $260; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from variable speed (40%), cast iron (30%), indexing (30%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 700 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

What do the two numbers mean?

The first is swing: the largest diameter you can turn (twice the distance from the spindle to the bed). The second is the distance between centers: the longest spindle you can turn. A 12 x 18 lathe turns 12-inch bowls and 18-inch spindles.

Why does low speed matter?

Large or unbalanced blanks need slow speeds. A common rule is diameter in inches x RPM between about 6,000 and 9,000, so a 12-inch bowl blank should start around 500 to 750 RPM. Lathes whose slowest speed is 800+ RPM are for spindles and small work.

Variable speed or belt steps?

Electronic variable speed lets you dial speed up gradually as a blank comes into balance. Belt-step lathes are cheaper but you stop the lathe to move the belt. Many good lathes do both: belt ranges plus a dial.

Do I need reverse and indexing?

Reverse helps when sanding bowls. Indexing locks the spindle at set positions so you can lay out flutes or drill evenly spaced holes. Neither is essential for a first lathe.

What else do I need?

Turning tools (a spindle gouge, bowl gouge, skew and parting tool), a face shield, a sharpening setup and usually a 4-jaw chuck. Budget at least as much for accessories as for a cheap lathe.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

400W 4-Speed Benchtop Wood Lathe, 14 x 40 Wood Turning Lathe Machine
Jojoka

400W 4-Speed Benchtop Wood Lathe, 14 x 40 Wood Turning Lathe Machine

3.0 5 reviews   $199.99

It advertises a 14-inch swing, but its slowest speed is 1,040 RPM, far too fast for a blank that size. Rated 3.0 stars.

Why we'd skip it

  • Its four speeds start at 1,040 RPM. A common woodturning rule keeps diameter (inches) x RPM around 6,000 to 9,000; a 14-inch blank at 1,040 RPM is about 14,500, fast enough to be dangerous if the blank is out of balance.
  • The model number is a random string ('akU-eQEh-WKxfwBQf-murQo9rb5bc'), so finding a manual, replacement belt or parts later is a gamble.
  • It's rated 3.0 stars, the lowest of the lathes we looked at.
