Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best HVLP Paint Sprayers

Electric HVLP paint and stain sprayers for furniture, cabinets, fences and walls, ranked from live Amazon data.

An HVLP sprayer atomizes paint with a high volume of low-pressure air, giving a smooth finish with less overspray than an airless sprayer. We ranked 10 best-sellers from HomeRight, Wagner, Fuji Spray, Graco and budget brands on rating, review volume and features (spraying unthinned paint, a separate turbine base, brass nozzles and flow control). Cheap handhelds need thinned paint; the turbine systems give the finest finish.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $60; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from unthinned (30%), turbine base (25%), flow control (25%), brass nozzles (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 10,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

Buyer's guide

What does HVLP mean?

High volume, low pressure: a turbine blows lots of air at low pressure to atomize paint. You get less overspray and bounce-back than with airless sprayers, which makes HVLP good for furniture, cabinets and trim. It's slower than airless on whole houses.

Do I have to thin the paint?

With most handheld HVLPs, yes, especially for latex. Use the viscosity cup to check. Wagner's FLEXiO models and Graco's EVO Plus are sold as spraying unthinned paint with the right nozzle.

Handheld or separate turbine?

Handhelds put the motor and paint in your hand, which gets heavy. Turbine systems like the Fuji Semi-PRO and Wagner Control Spray Max keep the motor on the floor with a 15 to 25 foot hose, so the gun stays light and the air stays cooler and drier.

What's the cleanup like?

Expect 10 to 20 minutes: run water (or the right solvent) through the gun, then take the nozzle apart and brush it. Paint left to dry in the nozzle is the most common reason sprayers stop working.

How do I avoid runs and orange peel?

Practice on cardboard, keep the gun 6 to 10 inches away and moving, overlap each pass by half, and spray thin coats. Orange peel usually means paint too thick or too little air.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

LESONJOY

1000W HVLP Paint Sprayer, Electric Paint Gun with 1400ML Container, 4 Copper Nozzles and 3 Spray Patterns

4.7 762 reviews   $39.99

A generic four-nozzle sprayer whose listing data is placeholder text, so you can't trace the model, parts or support. The near-identical PULENDY and VONFORN sprayers cost less or the same.

Why we'd skip it

  • The model number, model name and part number are all 'lqhs', and the spec table lists the sprayer's dimensions as 1 x 1 inch.
  • It claims a 1,000 W motor with no amp rating to back it, more than any other handheld here; VONFORN's similar design lists 700 W.
  • It's the same four-nozzle, three-pattern design as the VONFORN sprayer, which costs the same and has more than ten times the reviews.
