Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Sewer Inspection Cameras

Push-cable drain and sewer cameras for homeowners and plumbers, ranked from live Amazon data.

A sewer camera shows you what's inside a drain or main line, whether that's roots, a belly, a crushed pipe, or a lost toy, before you pay for a dig. Amazon's sewer cameras run from about $175 for a basic 100-foot camera to about $1,100 for self-leveling systems with a locator that pinpoints the problem from above ground. We ranked 10 on star rating, review volume, and features (self-leveling head, locator, recording, distance markings, and a 7-inch or larger screen).

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $180; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from self leveling (25%), locator (25%), big screen (20%), dvr (15%), distance marks (15%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 1,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

How long a cable do I need?

Measure from your cleanout to the street or septic tank and add 20 to 30 ft. For most houses 100 ft is enough. Long lots, rural properties, and commercial lines may need 165 ft. Only the full length is useful if the cable is stiff enough to push it there; 7 mm cables push farther than 5 mm.

What does self-leveling do?

A self-leveling head keeps the picture upright as the cable twists, so the bottom of the pipe stays at the bottom of the screen. It makes it much easier to judge sags, standing water, and which side a root is coming in from.

Do I need a locator?

A locator (512Hz sonde in the camera head plus a handheld receiver) tells you where the camera is under the yard and how deep. It's worth it if you plan to dig or need to mark a repair spot. If you just want to see whether there's a clog or roots, distance markings on the cable are enough.

Can I push a sewer camera through a toilet?

Not usually. Toilet traps are tight and can snag or crack the camera. Go in through a cleanout, or pull the toilet and enter through the flange. Clear standing clogs with a snake first; the camera can't get past a full blockage.

Will a $30 borescope work instead?

For a sink trap or a few feet of drain, maybe. For a sewer line, no: borescopes have 10 to 16 ft cables that are too floppy to push around bends, and they usually aren't rated for full submersion.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

TGJOR

TGJOR Endoscope Camera with Light, 5 in. 1080P Dual-Lens Borescope "for Sewer", 16.4 ft

4.4 1,300 reviews   $29.99

It's a handy $30 borescope for looking behind walls and into engines, but the title sells it as a sewer camera, and it can't do that job. For sewer lines, the VEVOR 98 ft camera is the cheapest real option.

Why we'd skip it

  • The cable is 16.4 ft. A house sewer line usually runs 30 to 100 ft or more from the cleanout to the street, so it can't reach most problems.
  • It's rated IP67, which covers temporary immersion only. Every sewer camera on our list has an IP68 head built to sit in standing water.
  • The listing's own spec table says "No Video" and "No picture, NoVideo" for capture and media, so you may not be able to record what you find to show a plumber.
  • A thin semi-rigid snake can't be pushed through traps and long sweeps the way a fiberglass push cable can.
