The contractor's standard: a 12-inch double-bevel slider that crosscuts a 2x14 and marks the cut with a shadow line that never needs calibrating.

Best for: Contractors who crosscut 2x14 and want a shadow-line guide.

Skip it if: You're short on space or budget; it's deep and costs $649.

Pros

  • XPS LED shadow line shows the kerf on the wood, with no laser to adjust
  • Miters 60° right and 50° left
  • Tall sliding fences hold 7-1/2" nested crown and 6-3/4" base
  • Dust system rated to catch over 75% of dust

Cons

  • $649, more than double the non-sliding DEWALTs
  • 58 lb and deep front to back because of the rear rails
  • The listing's spec table is sloppy (the model field reads DWS780-QS and one bullet says 1,100 W); the title and 15-amp description match the standard US saw

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 50% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 15% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $150; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from a sliding rail for wider cuts (35%), dual bevel (35%), a laser or LED cut guide (30%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 7,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

10-inch or 12-inch miter saw?

A 12-inch blade cuts wider and taller stock on a fixed saw: the 12-inch DEWALT DWS715 crosscuts a 2x8, while the 10-inch DWS713 stops at a 2x6. A 10-inch saw is lighter, spins faster, and its blades cost less. If you cut mostly trim and 2x4s, 10 inches is enough.

Do I need a sliding miter saw?

Only if you crosscut boards wider than a fixed saw handles. Sliders like the SKIL MS6305-00 and DEWALT DWS780 cut a 2x12 or 2x14 in one pass. The catch is weight and depth: the rails stick out the back, so a slider needs clear space behind it. Bosch's glide arm on the CM10GD cuts that depth by up to 10 inches.

Single bevel or dual bevel?

A single-bevel saw tilts one way, so for a bevel in the other direction you flip the board end for end. That's fine for framing and occasional trim. Dual bevel tilts both ways and saves real time on crown molding and long runs of matched bevels.

Laser or LED shadow line?

A laser draws a line beside the blade and has to be calibrated, and it can drift. An LED shadow line (DEWALT XPS, SKIL) lights the blade from above so its shadow falls exactly where the teeth will cut, with nothing to adjust. If a saw has neither, a pencil mark and a slow first touch work fine.

Can I cut metal with a miter saw?

Not with a standard wood blade. Cutting steel needs a saw geared for it and a blade rated for metal. A wood-cutting saw can handle aluminum trim and PVC with the right non-ferrous blade, but don't take a listing's "cuts metal" claim at face value.

What should I upgrade first?

The blade. Most saws ship with a 24- to 40-tooth general-purpose blade. A 60- to 80-tooth finish blade makes a bigger difference to trim cuts than any feature on this list.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

10-inch Compound Miter Saw, 5000RPM, 15 Amp, Single Bevel 0-45° with Extension Table, 36T Blade, Power Saw for Metal, Plastic, Wood, Laminates

4.5 305 reviews   $125.99

The title sells it as a saw for metal, but it spins a 36-tooth blade at 5,000 rpm, and the listing can't agree with itself on which way it bevels or miters. The Metabo HPT C10FCG2 costs about $14 less and has none of these problems.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says "Power Saw for Metal", yet it ships with a 36-tooth blade running at 5,000 rpm. Saws that actually cut metal slow down for it (the DOVAMAN here drops to 3,200 rpm) and use a blade made for metal. The bullets quietly narrow the claim to "soft metal".
  • The title says single bevel 0-45°. A bullet says the base adjusts "on both sides" for bevels, and the same bullet says miters go left only. The brand's own comparison chart says the bevel is left only. You can't tell from the listing what the saw does.
  • The spec table lists power as "1900 watt-hours" (a unit of stored energy, not motor power), blade material as alloy steel against a TCT blade in the title, and included components as "Bare Tool" while the bullets list a blade and two extension tables.
  • The brand, MarvTool, isn't in the title or the seller name (XXYD Official Direct), which makes parts and warranty support harder to track down.
