L-keys are the cheapest and most compact, and a big set covers every size — the default for most people. Folding sets keep the keys captive in a jackknife body so nothing gets lost and you get some leverage. T-handles give the most torque and speed for repetitive work, but take up the most room and usually cover fewer sizes. Many people own an L-key set plus a folder for the bag.

Do I need SAE and metric?

Yes, unless you know your gear is one or the other. Bikes, European furniture, and most electronics are metric; a lot of older American equipment is SAE (inch). What's a ball end for?
