Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best OBD2 Scanners

Code readers, Bluetooth adapters and ABS/SRS scan tools for 1996-and-newer vehicles, ranked from live Amazon data.

An OBD2 scanner plugs into the port under your dash and tells you why the check engine light is on, before you pay a shop to tell you. We ranked 10 best-sellers on rating, review volume and features (live data, ABS and airbag codes, Bluetooth to a phone app, and bidirectional tests). Basic code readers cover the engine and emissions; full scan tools also read brakes, airbags and the transmission. They run from about $23 for MOTOPOWER's code reader to $350 for Innova's bidirectional 5610.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $30; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from abs srs (35%), live data (30%), bidirectional (20%), bluetooth (15%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 60,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Will an OBD2 scanner work on my car?

Every car and light truck sold in the U.S. since 1996 has an OBD2 port, usually under the dashboard near the steering column. Basic engine codes work on all of them; ABS, airbag and other system coverage varies by brand and year.

Code reader or scan tool?

A code reader reads and clears check engine codes. A scan tool adds live sensor data, and the better ones read ABS, airbag, transmission and TPMS codes. If you've had a brake or airbag light, you need a scan tool.

Handheld or Bluetooth?

Handhelds plug in and work with no phone or account. Bluetooth adapters are smaller and use your phone's screen and an app, which can add repair reports, logging and vehicle-specific features.

Should I clear the check engine light?

Only after fixing the problem. Clearing the code turns off the light, but it also resets the emissions monitors, and the car may fail an inspection until they're ready again.

What does bidirectional mean?

A bidirectional tool can send commands to the car, such as turning on the fuel pump, cycling ABS valves or retracting an electronic parking brake. It's useful for testing parts, not just reading what's wrong.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

OnRetul

OnRetul V100 OBD2 Diagnostic Tool, Code Reader, Engine Light Diagnostic Tool, Battery Voltage Tester

4.0 151 reviews   $9.34

A $9 reader whose listing can't agree on which model it is. For about $14 more, the MOTOPOWER is a known reader with 52,419 reviews.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title calls it a V100, but the spec table lists model V310 and an operating system of Windows 10 for a plug-in handheld. You can't be sure which device arrives.
  • It claims to 'monitor vehicle battery health and charging system status', but the bullet describes only a voltage reading. Voltage alone can't tell you a battery's health.
  • It's rated 4.0 stars, below every scanner we rank, and it lists no warranty.
