The 10 Best MIG Welders

Flux-core and gas MIG welders for home garages, farms and fabrication, ranked from live Amazon data.

A MIG welder feeds wire through a gun to join steel quickly, the easiest kind of welding to learn. We ranked 10 best-sellers from YESWELDER, ARCCAPTAIN, Lincoln Electric, BESTMIG and FEMEROL on rating, review volume and features (gas MIG capability, 110V/220V input, spool-gun aluminum and synergic setup). Flux-core-only machines are the cheapest way to start.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $115; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from gas mig (30%), dual voltage (25%), aluminum ready (25%), synergic (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 3,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

Flux core or gas MIG?

Flux-core wire makes its own shielding, so there's no gas bottle and it works outdoors in wind; welds are spattery and need cleanup. Gas MIG uses solid wire and a CO2/argon bottle for clean welds on thinner metal, best indoors. Many welders here do both.

110V or 220V?

110V machines plug into a garage outlet and handle sheet metal up to about 3/16 inch. 220V roughly doubles the usable power for thicker steel. Dual-voltage welders give you both.

Can I weld aluminum?

Usually only with a spool gun (sold separately) and argon gas. Welders marked spool-gun ready, like the ARCCAPTAIN MIG200/MIG250 and YESWELDER MIG-205DS, can do it.

What is synergic control?

You pick the wire size or metal thickness and the welder sets matching voltage and wire speed. It makes learning much easier; experienced welders can switch to manual.

What else do I need?

An auto-darkening helmet, leather gloves and jacket, a wire brush and grinder, clamps, and for gas MIG a bottle of shielding gas. Weld in a ventilated area and keep a fire extinguisher close.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

145A MIG Welder, 110V 3-in-1 Flux Core Stick Lift TIG, 7.5 lb

4.4 195 reviews   $65.99

A flux-core welder sold as a 3-in-1 'MIG' welder whose listing contradicts itself on what's in the box and offers only a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Why we'd skip it

  • It promises 'Everything you need is in one box... no extra purchases required', but the first bullet says 'TIG torch not included—please purchase separately', so one of its three advertised modes needs another purchase.
  • It's called a MIG welder but only runs gasless flux-core wire; there's no gas MIG option.
  • The 'Warranty & Service' section offers 24-hour support and a 30-day money-back guarantee but states no warranty period at all. Lincoln, for comparison, lists 12 months on its 90i FC.
