A charger refills a flat battery; a maintainer (or 'tender') holds a full battery at the right voltage while it sits. Low-amp units (0.75 to 1.5 A) are maintainers. 5 A and up can charge a dead car battery overnight. Most smart chargers do both.

How many amps do I need?

For a motorcycle or mower, 1 A. For a car you drive, 4 to 6 A charges in a night. For trucks, boats and RVs, 10 A or more. Bigger isn't better for small batteries; follow the battery maker's limit.

Can it charge lithium batteries?

Only if it has a lithium mode. NOCO's GENIUS chargers and some Battery Tender models do; most Schumacher and CTEK models here are lead-acid and AGM only. Charging lithium on a lead-acid profile can damage it.

Is it safe to leave connected all winter?

That's what smart maintainers are for: they switch to a float or pulse mode once the battery is full. Old-style 'trickle' chargers without automatic shutoff can overcharge.

What does desulfation do?

It pulses the battery to break down sulfate crystals that build up when a lead-acid battery sits discharged. It can help a weak battery; it won't revive one with a dead cell.
