How many amps do I need?

Ignore the peak amp number: there's no standard for it, and budget brands inflate it. Use the maker's rated engine size instead. A 4-cylinder car needs a pack rated for about 4.0L gas; V8 trucks and diesels need one rated for their engine size or bigger.

Lithium or lead-acid?

Lithium packs weigh 1 to 7 lbs and double as power banks. Lead-acid (AGM) boxes like the Clore weigh 15-20 lbs but handle repeated jumps and cold weather well, which is why shops use them.

What does boost or force-start mode do?

Most packs won't send power unless they detect some voltage in the car's battery, as a safety feature. If the battery reads near zero, boost mode overrides that check. Use it carefully and only with the clamps on the right terminals.

How do I keep a jump starter ready?

Recharge it every 3 months, and after every use. Keep it out of extreme heat on the dashboard. A dead jump starter is just a paperweight.

Is a jump starter the same as a battery charger?

No. A jump starter gives a short burst to crank the engine; the car's alternator then charges the battery. If the battery keeps dying, test it or charge it with a proper charger.

Why we'd skip it

  • It claims 8000 amps peak from a 7,200 mAh battery in a 403 g (0.9 lb) pack. NOCO's 7.5 lb GB150 is rated 3000 A. A pack a tenth the weight claiming nearly three times the current isn't a believable figure.
  • It says it starts 'all gas engines'. Every reputable maker on this list names a maximum engine size, because a small pack can't start every engine.
  • It lists 8 AWG cables, much thinner than the #2 AWG cables on the Clore JNC660, yet claims more than four times its peak current.
