10-inch or 8-1/4-inch table saw?

A 10-inch saw cuts about 3 to 3-5/8 inches deep, enough for a 4x4 in one pass, and 10-inch blades are sold everywhere. An 8-1/4-inch saw cuts about 2-1/2 inches deep, which still handles 2x lumber and sheet goods, and weighs 40 to 55 lb. Buy the smaller saw if you carry it up stairs or between jobs often.

What does rip capacity mean?

It's the widest board you can cut with the fence on the right side of the blade. At 24 inches or more you can split a 4x8 sheet of plywood down the middle. At 30 inches or more you can take a 2-foot shelf off the long edge of a sheet. Cheap benchtop saws often don't publish this number at all.

Why does a rack and pinion fence matter?

A rack and pinion fence moves both ends together on geared rails, so it stays parallel to the blade when you slide it. A cheaper clamp-on fence can lock slightly out of square, which makes the board pinch the blade and kick back. If you plan to rip much sheet stock, don't skip this feature.

Do I need a stand?

A jobsite saw needs to sit at about waist height on something that won't move. Several saws here come on a folding or rolling stand. The compact 8-1/4-inch DEWALT DWE7485 and SKIL TS6308 don't, so either budget for a stand or bolt the saw to a sturdy bench.

Can a portable table saw cut dados?

Some can. You need a saw whose arbor and throat accept a stacked dado blade, plus a dado insert plate. Of the saws here, the Evolution R10TBLX ships with a dado plate, and the SKIL TS6307 takes an 8-inch dado stack up to 5/8 inch wide with an insert sold separately. Check the manual before buying a dado set for any saw.

Will a 15-amp saw trip my breaker?
