Rotary hammer or hammer drill?

A hammer drill uses ridged clutch plates to rattle the bit. That's fine for a few 1/4" anchor holes in brick. A rotary hammer uses a piston to strike the bit, so it drills concrete several times faster, handles 1/2" and larger holes easily, and can chip in hammer-only mode. If you're drilling more than a handful of holes in concrete, get a rotary hammer.

What is SDS-Plus, and do I need special bits?

SDS-Plus is the shank and chuck system on every hammer on this page. The bit slides in and locks without a key, and it can slide back and forth so the piston can strike it. You need SDS-Plus bits and chisels. Regular round-shank bits won't fit without an adapter chuck, and SDS-Max bits are a larger, different size.

How much impact energy do I need?

Around 2 to 3 joules (1.5 to 2.2 ft-lb) handles anchor holes up to about 1/2" and light tile removal. The 13-amp hammers rated 5 to 7 joules are better for breaking floor tile, chiseling concrete, and holes over 3/4", but they weigh 12 lb or more. Brands don't all measure impact energy the same way, so treat small differences between brands with some skepticism.

Is vibration control worth paying for?

If you'll run it for more than a few minutes at a time, yes. Hammering vibration is what wears out your hands and arms. DEWALT's SHOCKS, Makita's AVT, and Bosch's counter-balance systems cut what reaches the handle; many budget tools only add a padded grip.

Why don't the name-brand hammers include bits?

DEWALT, Bosch, and Makita sell the tool with a side handle, depth rod, and case, and expect you to buy bits for the job. A decent SDS-Plus bit and chisel set runs $30 to $40. The budget brands bundle bits and chisels, which is handy for a first project, but those bits tend to wear out quickly.

What does a safety clutch do?

If the bit catches on rebar or jams in the hole, the motor's torque can twist the tool hard enough to hurt your wrist. A slip clutch or kickback sensor disconnects the drive when that happens. Every pick here lists one except the Bosch 11255VSR, whose listing doesn't mention it.

The spec table lists 230 volts and 12.5 milliamps. The bullets say 120 V and 12.5 amps. Some of the published numbers are wrong, and the listing doesn't tell you which.
