The 10 Best Cordless Framing Nailers

Battery-powered framing nailers for decks, sheds and remodels, ranked from live Amazon data.

Cordless framing nailers drive 2 to 3-1/2 inch nails without a compressor, hose or gas cartridge. We ranked 10 best-sellers from DEWALT, Milwaukee, Makita, Metabo HPT and CRAFTSMAN on rating, review volume and features (a battery in the box, a light tool body and a warranty of three years or more). The first decision is the nail angle: 21° nailers take plastic-strip nails, 30° nailers take paper-tape nails.

Batteries only fit their own brand's platform, so the best tool for you is often the best one that runs on the packs you already have. Here's our top-ranked pick on each platform on this page. A tool-only model skips the cost of a battery and charger you don't need.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $300; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from a complete kit (40%), light (30%), long warranty (30%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 400 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

21-degree or 30-degree?

It comes down to the nails you can buy locally and your building code. 21° nailers take plastic-strip full round head nails. 30° (and 30-34°) nailers take paper-tape nails, usually clipped head, and the magazine is shorter so it fits between studs more easily. Check that full round head nails aren't required where you build before going 30° with clipped heads.

Are cordless framing nailers as good as pneumatic?

For decks, sheds, remodels and punch-out work, yes: no compressor, no hose, and the better ones fire 2 to 3 nails per second. Full-time production framers still tend to use pneumatic because the tools are lighter and never need charging.

Why are these so heavy?

A cordless framer carries its own motor and drive system, so most weigh 8 to 11 lb before you add the battery. The Metabo HPT kits are the lightest here at 8.2 to 8.4 lb.

Should I buy the bare tool or a kit?

If you already own batteries on the same platform, buy the bare tool and use your largest battery. If not, a kit is usually the cheaper way in than buying a bare tool, battery and charger separately.

How many nails per charge?

The listings here claim about 500 to 1,100 per charge, depending on the battery. Use a 4.0Ah or larger battery for framing; small compact packs run out fast and can struggle to sink 3-1/2 inch nails.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

Milwauke M18 FUEL 21-Degree Framing Nailer (Tool Only) New
cakuuma

Milwauke M18 FUEL 21-Degree Framing Nailer (Tool Only) New

4.7 391 reviews   $449

This listing sells a Milwaukee 2744-20 under the brand 'cakuuma' with the maker spelled 'Milwauke', and its bullets are generic company boilerplate with no specs. Buy a Milwaukee-branded listing instead.

Why we'd skip it

  • The brand field says 'cakuuma' and the title and manufacturer field both spell the maker 'Milwauke', so it's unclear who is selling it or whether Milwaukee's warranty applies.
  • None of the five bullets describe the nailer: they're generic praise for the company ('is dedicated to delivering a steady stream of advanced solutions') with the brand name missing.
  • It lists no nail range, angle details, modes or warranty, which you need to match a nailer to your nails.
