This is the biggest trap in cordless saw listings. A 'bare tool' or 'tool only' saw ships with no battery or charger — a bargain if you already own that brand's packs, useless out of the box if you don't. A 'kit' includes a battery and charger. Every pick above says which it is.

Which battery platform?

A cordless saw is only as good as its batteries. Buying one on the same platform as a drill or driver you already own (DEWALT 20V MAX, Milwaukee M18, RYOBI ONE+, CRAFTSMAN V20) means one battery lineup for everything — a real reason to stay in one brand.

Will cordless keep up with corded?

For most cuts, yes — especially brushless 7-1/4" saws like the DEWALT DCS570. But a corded 15-amp saw still gives more sustained power for the money on long rips and thick stock. If you don't need portability, corded is cheaper and stronger.

What blade size?

6-1/2 inch is the common cordless size — light, with enough depth for 2x lumber in one pass. 7-1/4 inch cordless saws match corded cut depth but drain batteries faster. 4-1/2 inch minis are for plywood, trim, and flooring, not framing.

Watch out for mini saws

Why we'd skip it

It cuts only 5/8 inch (16 mm) deep. A real circular saw cuts about 2-1/2 inches — enough to crosscut a 2x4 in one pass. At 5/8", it can't cut through standard lumber at all.
It's a 4-inch angle grinder with a saw guard, spinning at 12,000 RPM. Real circular saws run around 5,000-5,800 RPM; a wood blade at grinder speed is a kickback and injury risk.
No-name "Bigheimer" brand, sold tool-only (needs a DEWALT battery), and the lowest star rating in the category at 3.5.
If you want to cut metal or tile, buy a grinder. To cut wood, buy a real circular saw.
