Real data, ranked. No fluff, no filler.

The 10 Best Jack Stands

2-ton to 10-ton jack stands with ratchet and double-pin locks for cars, SUVs and trucks, ranked from live Amazon data.

Jack stands are what actually hold the car while you're under it; the floor jack only lifts it. We ranked 10 best-selling pairs on rating, review volume and features (a second locking pin, a stated ASME or ANSI safety standard, 3-ton or higher capacity, and a tall reach for trucks). Most stands use a ratchet bar that locks as you raise it; double-locking stands add a pin through the bar as a backup. They run from about $30 a pair to $215 for Sunex's 10-ton pin stands.

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $35; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from double lock (35%), standard (30%), three ton (20%), tall (15%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 15,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

What changed

We re-check every listing on this page on a rotation. The most recent changes:

Buyer's guide

What capacity jack stands do I need?

Ratings are usually per pair. A 3-ton pair covers most cars and small SUVs, since each end of a car carries only part of its weight. Pickups and large SUVs are better on 6-ton stands with a taller range.

Ratchet or pin-type?

Ratchet stands adjust quickly in small steps and lock as you raise them. Pin-type stands lock with a steel pin through the post, which is simple and strong but has fewer heights. Double-locking stands combine both.

Where do I put jack stands?

On the manufacturer's support points (check the owner's manual), usually the pinch welds or frame rails, on hard level ground. Never on suspension arms, the oil pan or asphalt on a hot day.

How do I know the stands are set safely?

Lower the car onto both stands, then push firmly on the car before getting under it. Leave the floor jack lightly raised under a solid point as a backup, and chock the wheels still on the ground.

Do jack stands need a safety standard?

In the U.S., ASME PASE (and the older ANSI/PALD) covers portable automotive lifting and support equipment. A stated standard means the design was tested to it.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

Powerbuilt 3 Ton, Bottle Jack and Jack Stands in One, Heavy Duty Vehicle Unijack (620471)
Powerbuilt

Powerbuilt 3 Ton, Bottle Jack and Jack Stands in One, Heavy Duty Vehicle Unijack (620471)

4.5 3,194 reviews   $99.99

A jack-and-stand combo whose listing can't agree on how much it holds, sold as one unit for the price of two or three pairs of real stands. Buy a floor jack and a pair of Amazon Basics stands instead.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says 3 tons and 6,000 lb, but the bullets say '3,000-pound capacity.' On something you lie under, the rated load has to be unambiguous.
  • The title says 'Jack Stands', but you get one unit. Supporting a car properly takes at least two stands, so you'd need two of these at about $200.
  • It holds the vehicle on a hydraulic bottle jack with a ratchet bar backup. A dedicated mechanical stand doesn't depend on a hydraulic seal at all.
