Impact sockets are made from tougher, more ductile steel (usually Cr-Mo) with thicker walls and a black finish. Chrome sockets can crack or shatter on an impact wrench.

1/2 or 3/8-inch drive?

1/2-inch drive is the standard for lug nuts, suspension and most impact wrenches. 3/8-inch fits smaller impact wrenches and tight spots.

Deep or shallow?

Deep sockets reach nuts on long studs and bolts. Shallow sockets fit where clearance is tight. A set with both covers most jobs.

Six-point or twelve-point?

Six-point impact sockets grip the flats of a fastener and are far less likely to round it off under impact.

Is a ratchet OK on impact sockets?

Yes, impact sockets work with hand ratchets. The reverse isn't true: don't use chrome sockets on an impact wrench.
