How we rank

Every drill gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on features like a brushless motor, two-speed gearbox, LED light, and a second battery. Best Overall is the highest score. Best Budget is the highest score at or under $60.

Buyer's guide

Voltage: 12V or 20V?

12V drills are lighter and cheaper and handle furniture, shelves, and small jobs. 20V drills have the torque for drilling into hardwood, driving long screws, and general home projects. If you only own one drill, buy 20V.

Brushless or brushed?

Brushless motors run cooler, last longer, and squeeze more runtime from a battery. They cost more. For occasional DIY, a brushed drill like the DCD771 is fine; if you'll use it weekly, pay up for brushless.

How much torque do I need?

Torque is twisting power. Under ~300 in-lbs (or ~35 Nm) is light-duty — screws and small bits. Name-brand 20V drills push well past that for drilling into wood and metal. None of these are rated for concrete or masonry.

One battery or two?

Two batteries mean you never stop to charge. Kits like the DCD771 and PULITUO include a spare; most budget drills ship with one, so factor a second battery into the price.

What does chuck size mean?

The chuck holds the bit. A 3/8 in chuck fits most home bits; a 1/2 in chuck accepts larger bits and grips better for heavy drilling. Keyless chucks let you swap bits by hand.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the cordless-drill search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

✕ Avoid
JH Steady 21V Cordless Drill Driver Kit
JH Steady

JH Steady 21V Cordless Drill Driver Kit

4.0 96 reviews   $35.99

The lowest-ranked drill we found — and the listing itself is the reason. Skip it.

Why we'd skip it

  • The spec sheet claims a 30,000 rpm max speed while the description says 1,500 rpm. A drill does not spin at 30,000 rpm — that is a rotary-tool number. When a listing contradicts itself on the headline spec, you can't trust anything else on the page.
  • "JH Steady" is a no-name brand with no service record, and the battery is a proprietary 21V pack. When it dies you are buying a whole new drill, not a replacement battery.
  • Only 96 reviews, and the page sells several different "kit options" under one listing — so those reviews may not even be for this exact drill. That is not enough verified feedback to trust a 4.0-star average.
  • "21V" is marketing inflation. Serious drills run 18V or 20V MAX; padding the number to 21 is a spec game, not extra power.
