The 10 Best Transmission Jacks

Telescoping and low-profile transmission jacks for home and shop, ranked from live Amazon data.

A transmission jack holds a transmission level while you unbolt it and lower it out, a job that is dangerous on a floor jack. There are two kinds: telescoping (high-lift) jacks that reach 67 to 74 inches for cars on a lift, and low-profile floor jacks that roll under cars on jack stands. We ranked 10 on star rating, review volume, and features (foot-pedal lift, a tilting saddle, a dual-piston pump, and locking casters).

How we rank

Every tool gets one score from 0 to 100, weighted 45% on its star rating, 35% on how many people have reviewed it (more reviews = more confidence the rating is real), and 20% on the features that matter for the job. The list is ordered by that score. Best Overall is our pick for the best all-around, ready-to-use tool; Best Budget the best value at or under $100; and Money No Object the one to buy if price is no object.

The features score is built from foot pedal (30%), tilt saddle (25%), locking casters (25%), dual pump (20%), capped at 100. The review-count score is on a log scale, so each tenfold jump in reviews adds the same amount, and 1,000 or more reviews gets full marks. Open Why this score on any tool to see its numbers.

Buyer's guide

Telescoping or low profile?

Telescoping (high-lift) jacks start around 33 to 35 in. and reach 67 to 74 in. They're built for cars on a two-post lift. Low-profile jacks start at about 7 to 8 in. and top out around 23 to 27 in., so they're for cars on jack stands. Pick the one that matches how you lift the car.

How much capacity do I need?

Most car automatics weigh roughly 150 to 250 lb dry, and many light-truck automatics run 200 to 350 lb. A 450 lb jack covers most cars. For trucks, transfer cases, and a margin for torque converter fluid, a 1,000 lb or larger jack is the safer pick.

Can I use a floor jack instead?

Not safely on its own. A floor jack's saddle is small, it rises in an arc, and there's nothing to strap the transmission to. Bolt-on adapter plates exist, but they're usually rated around 300 lb. A real transmission jack has a wide saddle with tilt adjustment and chains.

Why does saddle tilt matter?

The transmission's input shaft has to slide straight into the engine's pilot bearing or torque converter. A saddle that tilts forward, back, and side to side lets you match the engine's angle instead of muscling the transmission into place.

Do I need a foot pedal?

It helps. With the car on a lift you'll have both hands on the transmission, so a foot pedal lets you raise it without letting go. The telescoping jacks here all use a foot pedal; the low-profile ones use a hand pump.

Tools to avoid

Not everything in the search results deserves your money. This one would rank dead last on our scale — here's the listing to walk past, and exactly why.

VEVOR

VEVOR Adjustable Floor Transmission Jack, 2,200 lb / 1T Low Profile, 7.28 to 27.6 in.

2.1 7 reviews   $329.90

It's currently Amazon's #1 seller in Transmission Jacks, on the strength of a 2,200 lb headline. The fine print cuts that in half for the way you actually use one, and it costs twice as much as the MOTOOS low-profile jack.

Why we'd skip it

  • The title says 2,200 lb, but the first bullet says the transport load is 1,100 lb. A transmission jack spends most of its working life rolling a loaded transmission out from under the car, so 1,100 lb is the rating that matters.
  • At $330 it costs about twice as much as the 1,100 lb MOTOOS low-profile jack.
  • The spec table lists its vehicle service type as "ATV" while the title and bullets pitch it for heavy-duty automotive work.
  • Buyers rate it 2.1 stars, the lowest of any jack we considered for this list.
